Green Destinations - Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort
Posted on July 30, 2008
Many people mistakenly believe that in order to be “green” they must forgo any travel plans. This simply isn’t true. Travel suppliers are designing eco-friendly and green vacation destinations at lightening speed in response to the publics social shift in environmental awareness.
Jean-Michel Cousteau is just such an entrepreneur. He has successfully been able to weave his moral convictions about the environment throughout the design for his new luxury resort in Fiji, placing a foundation of environmental responsibility under a five-star setting. The Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort has everything you would expect from a fine tropical luxury resort - except the guilt. Just knowing that you’re helping to maintain the natural beauty of this island paradise will cause even the most staunch environmentalist to jump for joy.
Situated on a 17-acre coconut plantation, the resort lines the beautiful coast of Savusavu Bay. Designed to be a romantic destination for couples, honeymooners or for weddings, it also provides many wonderful opportunities for multi-generational families looking to enjoy both relaxation and eco-friendly activities.
The resort tariff includes all meals - cooked in the traditional Fijian and South Pacific style using organic ingredients from the resorts on-site organic garden.
GREEN HIGHLIGHTS
While the Fiji Islands Resort has the standard amenities of any luxury resort (world-class spa, award-winning cuisine, spectacular accommodations), there are both obvious and subtle differences that set it apart from all others. Some of those differences include:
On-Site Marine Biologist: This resort boasts its own resident marine biologist to educate and inform guests about the delicate ecosystem of the island.
Waste Water System: Recycled bottles and coconuts are used to produce clean water in picturesque lagoons.
Cultural-Hosts: Each day of the week is devoted to educating guests about a different aspect of the local culture and environment.
Recycling Program: The resort was the first company on Savusavu to institute a recycling program.
Organic Garden: Most of the herbs, spices, and vegetables used in the restaurant come from the resorts on-site organic garden - reducing Co2 emissions from shipping produce to the resort.
Community Involvement: The resort works with local schools and through community groups to promote environmental education to the local population.
Fishing Outside the Reef: The resort catches all its fish in the deep ocean where fish are plentiful. This ensures they aren’t doing any damage to the delicate ecosystem of the nearby reefs.
ACCOMMODATIONS
As with all luxury resorts, they offer a variety of accommodation choices. The private villa or reef, ocean-view, or garden-view bures (”bure” is a Fijian word meaning straw and wood hut) all boast spacious rooms with generous outside decks. Some of the two-level bures have an upstairs balcony, as well.
CONCLUSION
This resort was built with the environmentally-minded traveler in mind. Amidst this absolutely gorgeous resort, you can feel good knowing your travel dollars are being spent with a company dedicated to protecting the environment.
