Costa Blanca Holidays in Moraira

Posted on August 15, 2008

One of the most exclusive holiday resorts on Spain’s Costa Blanca is Moraira located about 25 miles north of Benidorm, sandwiched between the resorts of Javea and Calpe.

Moraira is generally regarded as being one of the more up market resorts and the place to go if you want to enjoy a quiet beach holiday without the crowds associated with some of Spain’s larger resorts. There are some hotels in and around Moraira, as well as holiday apartments to let, and a large number of villas around the hills surrounding Moraira. The town itself has kept a small town atmosphere by not allowing any high-rise buildings.

Moraira has two beaches, one at each end of the town, and both have their own characters. The smaller of the two beaches is in a small-secluded cove called “El Portet”. This has a very Mediterranean feel to it and is perfect for snorkeling. The main beach, which is good for families, is next to the main town by the park, and includes amenities such as cafes and water-sports.

The main beach is guarded by the Castle, which is a single tower structure on the seafront itself. Each year the castle is fought over during the famous Moors and Christians fiesta. The event lasts for about a weeks with parades, elaborate costumes, fairs and firework displays.

The other big event that Moraira is well known for is the Moraira Music Festival. This open-air concert is a showcase for entertainers and performers on the Costa Blanca both amateur and professional. During the rest of the year when the festival is not on, you can see many of these entertainers in the music bars in and around Moraira. Most of the music bars can be found together at a place called the Paichi Centre and offers a choice of different types of music to suit all tastes, as well as big screen sports and pub quizzes.

As Moraira sits between some of the major holiday resorts on the Costa Blanca it is perfectly placed to visit these resorts without having to drive very far. There are several car rental firms in the town making it easy to get out to explore the countryside. The resort of Javea is a few kilometers to the north with its vast array of bars and restaurants, and Calpe a little further to the south of Moraira. Calpe is the larger of the two holiday resorts and has larger beaches with more water sports, restaurants and a harbor with boat trips to Benidorm, Altea and Denia. When you have spent a day in these busier resorts, you can return to the quiet of Moraira to enjoy an evening sitting by the pool watching the sunset.

Moraira is close enough to the large holiday resorts to take advantage of their facilities, but far enough away to maintain an exclusive atmosphere for a quiet relaxing Mediterranean holiday.
